How to Pack for a Telluride Vacation

Your Guide to Packing for Telluride

Planning a trip to Telluride is almost as fun as actually being there. With the potential for so many outdoor activities and adventures on the horizon, it’s easy to forget about the logistics of traveling somewhere that you’ve never been before. This is why it’s so important to plan out your packing in advance–rather than being caught in a situation where your clothing is not up to the ever-shifting mountain weather, you can plan ahead and ensure you have all the right things in your suitcase before you go.

That’s why today, we’ve come up with an ideal packing list for your next Telluride vacation. Whether you decide to go during the summer for a festival or the winter to ski or board, we’ve got you covered with this helpful guide to packing for Telluride.

A Winter Guide to Packing for Telluride

Heading to the box canyon for some skiing or boarding adventures? With average lows in the teens and highs hovering around the 30s during the winter, you don’t typically need to worry about bundling up for sub-zero temperatures or dealing with frigid conditions for longer than a few days at a time. However, packing light for wintertime is not recommended–instead, here’s a list of some of the gear that you’ll need to pack for a winter vacation to Telluride:

  • Skis, snowboards, and other snow gear

  • 3-4 pairs of long underwear

  • 2-3 long-sleeved shirts

  • 2-3 warm jackets or sweaters

  • 3-5 pairs of pants

  • 5-7 pairs of wool socks

  • 1 nice outfit for a night of Telluride fine dining

  • Ski pants or ski bib

  • Winter coat or ski jacket

  • Waterproof gloves

  • Snow boots

  • Sunglasses

  • Ski goggles

  • Beanie/warm hat

  • Chapstick or lip balm

Don’t forget to pack other essentials that you’ll need, such as your phone charger and toiletries. We recommend grabbing a portable battery or power bank for your trip, as batteries can easily die in colder weather that you may experience, especially up on the ski slopes.

Summer Essentials for Telluride

Packing for a summer trip to Telluride is a little bit different than for other summer locales. During the morning and early afternoon, there’s typically plenty of sun and warmth, but once the late afternoon rolls around, you’ll usually see a storm or two that will bring the temperatures down quite a bit. Because of this, packing is a bit of a balancing act between warm and cool weather.

Here’s what we recommend when you’re packing for the warmer seasons:

  • 3-5 short sleeved shirts

  • 1-2 long sleeved shirts

  • 3-5 pairs of pants

  • 1 bathing suit

  • 1-2 warm jackets or sweaters

  • 1 windbreaker jacket or rain jacket

  • 1 pair of hiking shoes for hiking the trails

  • 1 pair of comfortable walking shoes

  • Brimmed hat or cap

  • Sunglasses

  • Chapstick or lip balm

The activities that you participate in during the summer will likely dictate the rest of your packing needs, such as fishing supplies for fishing trips, hiking gear for trekking the trails, and rock climbing equipment that will help you stay safe while climbing.

Packing Tips for a Great Telluride Vacation

Use Your Heaviest Sweaters and Coats as Your Foundation

When you’re putting your luggage together, it’s important to pack with a plan in mind, and one of our best tips is to always put your heaviest sweaters, coats, and jackets on the very bottom of your luggage. Not only will the rest of your clothing help to compress these bulky items down and give you more room in your suitcase, you’re less likely to have to go searching for these items while unpacking if you already know they’re at the bottom of the case. Another added benefit is that your luggage will be a lot more stable when it’s sitting by itself, without these bulky items in front weighing it down.

Utilize Packing Cubes to Create More Space

If you’re a seasoned traveler, you probably already have some packing cubes that you utilize to make the most room possible in your luggage, but if not, you should definitely order some before your trip to ensure you are able to pack everything that you need to.

Packing cubes are designed to help compress your clothing and other luggage items to fit better in the space than just rolled or folded clothing will. In addition, these cubes can help you to organize your luggage better. Just imagine: shirts in one cube, pants in another, and toiletries in a third will cut down massively on the space utilized, plus you’ll know where everything is when you go to unpack.
