Day Trips Worth Your While

Lake Tahoe is known for its scenic views and amazing year-round activities. But, if you’re hoping to get away from the crowds for a day and do some exploration of the towns and nature surrounding America’s largest alpine lake, there’s plenty of options for day trips from the South Lake Tahoe area. We’ve put together a list of our favorite places to roadtrip during your stay in Tahoe. Each of these drives has something unique to offer to travelers, whether that be awe-inspiring vistas or the opportunity to learn about the history of the area.

#1: Reno, NV - 62mi/1.5hr drive

For many travelers seeking to enjoy the mountain bliss of Tahoe, their journey starts and ends in Reno, which is home to the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

However, if you have a hankering for a short and scenic road trip while you’re staying in Tahoe, why not take a drive up north to Reno? There’s plenty of activities available to fill your day–start with a tour of the National Automobile Museum, then take a walk down the Truckee River Walk, and end your day with a visit to The Theater for a performance of Magique, Reno’s best-known magic show, before heading back to Tahoe for the evening.

#2: Virginia City, NV - 43mi/1 hr 15 min drive

History fans will love a day trip to Virginia City, Nevada. Located a little over an hour north of South Lake Tahoe, this Old West town is home to Chollar Mine, which was once one of the richest silver-mining operations in all of the West.
